Plane crash survivors take “selfie of the year”

I’d be the happiest and most thankful person alive!”</p> <p dir="ltr">A third noted that at the time very few people would have known there had been fatalities resulting from the crash, particularly if they were on the plane.</p> <p dir="ltr">“In the moment they took the picture, only a few people knew that two firefighters had died. They thought it was a problem with the aeroplane,” they explained.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Media took, at least, an hour and a half to report what really happened. Even firefighters from Lima didn’t know for the first hour. Fisherman declared a hero after Tanzanian crash efforts

<p dir="ltr">After a plane crashed in Tanzania’s Lake Victoria on November 6, one fisherman who nearly lost his life trying to save the trapped pilots has spoken about his efforts.</p> <p dir="ltr">The passenger plane was carrying 43 people when the pilots attempted to land at Bukoba airport after encountering problems and enduring bad weather.</p> <p dir="ltr">Majaliwa Jackson, who was officially declared a hero and awarded 1 million Tanzanian shillings ($AU 665 or $NZ 725), told the <em><a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-63540823" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC</a></em> from hospital of the panic he felt when he saw the passenger plane approaching from the wrong direction before crashing into the lake.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Jackson told the outlet that he rushed to the scene with three other fishermen, helping to open the rear door by smashing it with a rowing oar and allowing passengers seated towards the back of the plane to be rescued.</p> <p dir="ltr">After moving to the front of the plane and diving into the water, Mr Jackson said he and one of the other pilots communicated by making signs through the cockpit window.</p> <p dir="ltr">"He directed me to break the window screen. I emerged from the water and asked airport security, who had arrived, if they have any tools that we can use to smash the screen,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">"They gave me an axe, but I was stopped by a man with a public announcement speaker from going down and smashing the screen. He said they were already in communication with the pilots and there was no water leakage in the cockpit.”</p> <p dir="ltr">But, when he dived back in and waved goodbye to the pilot after he was stopped from smashing the screen, the pilot then indicated he wanted to be rescued.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Jackson then attempted to pull the cockpit emergency door off by tying a rope from it to other boats, but he was knocked unconscious when the rope broke and struck him in the face.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The next thing I knew I was here at the hospital,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">In addition to his monetary reward, Mr Jackson was offered a job with the firefighting and rescue brigade, as well as training in rescue operations to sharpen his skills.</p> <p dir="ltr">The pilots were among 19 confirmed fatalities from the crash.</p> <p dir="ltr">Emergency crews used ropes to pull the plane, which had been completely submerged, closer to shore.</p> <p dir="ltr">Airline Precision Air previously said that 26 passengers had been rescued and taken to hospital, but has since said there were only 24 survivors.</p> <p dir="ltr">Kagera police commander William Mwampaghale said that the crash occurred at around 8.50am local time on Sunday.</p> <p dir="ltr">“When the aircraft was about 100m mid-air, it encountered problems and bad weather. Car crash claims the life of TV icon Leslie Jordan

<p dir="ltr">TV actor and social media sensation Leslie Jordan has died at the age of 67.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Will &amp; Grace star crashed his BMW into the side of a building in Los Angeles on Monday morning, local time, with the <em>New York Post</em> reporting that he suffered from a medical emergency while behind the wheel.</p> <p dir="ltr">In a statement shared with the <em>Post</em>, Jordan’s manager confirmed the heartbreaking news.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The world is definitely a much darker place today without the love and light of Leslie Jordan,” his manager said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Not only was he a mega talent and joy to work with, but he provided an emotional sanctuary to the nation at one of its most difficult times.</p> <p dir="ltr">“What he lacked in height he made up for in generosity and greatness as a son, brother, artist, comedian, partner and human being.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Knowing that he has left the world at the height of both his professional and personal life is the only solace one can have today.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The 4’11” star rose to fame on television screens in the 1990s, with roles in <em>Reasonable Doubts</em>, <em>Ally McBeal</em>, <em>Boston Legal</em>, and<em> Judging Amy</em>, as well as guest appearances on <em>Dharma &amp; Greg</em>, <em>Ellen</em>, and <em>Caroline in the City</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">He became best-known for his comedic roles, including his starring role in the show<em> Hearts Afire</em> and as sassy socialite Beverly Leslie in <em>Will &amp; Anne Heche to be taken off life support

<p dir="ltr">US actress Anne Heche will be taken off life support days after she was reported to be brain dead.</p> <p dir="ltr">The decision comes after the 53-year-old was matched with an organ recipient, per CNN, in line with her wishes, after Heche was pulled out of her burning car, which she had <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/actress-fighting-for-her-life-after-horror-car-crash" target="_blank" rel="noopener">driven into an LA home</a> while driving 104 km/h on August 5.</p> <p dir="ltr">Heche's publicist broke the news that the <em>Six Days, Seven Nights</em> star was "not expected to survive" on Friday, revealing that Heche had "suffered a severe anoxic brain injury".</p> <p dir="ltr">“We have lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend,” her spokesperson told <em>Page Six</em> at the time.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Anne will be deeply missed but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic body of work, and her passionate advocacy.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-02f14bcd-7fff-85ab-3ecc-d0d822147ddc"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">“Her bravery for always standing in her truth, spreading her message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact.”</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; The International Space Station to crash to Earth in 2030

<p dir="ltr">The International Space Station is expected to stay in operation until the end of 2030, after which time it will be crashed into a remote part of the Pacific Ocean, <a href="https://7news.com.au/technology/space/nasa-to-retire-the-international-space-station-by-2031-by-crashing-it-into-the-pacific-ocean-c-5549714" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to newly published plans from NASA.</p><p dir="ltr">Since its launch in 2000, the ISS has orbited 227 nautical miles (420.4 kilometres) above Earth, during which time more than 200 astronauts from 19 countries enjoyed stints aboard.</p><p dir="ltr">After 2030, NASA said the ISS would be replaced by commercially operated space platforms as a venue for collaboration and scientific research.</p><p dir="ltr">“The private sector is technically and financially capable of developing and operating commercial low-Earth orbit destinations, with NASA’s assistance,” Phil McAlister, director of commercial space at NASA, said in a <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/nasa-provides-updated-international-space-station-transition-plan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.</p><p dir="ltr">“We look forward to sharing our lessons learned and operations experience with the private sector to help them develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective destinations in space.</p><p dir="ltr">“The report we have delivered to Congress describes, in detail, our comprehensive plan for ensuring a smooth transition to commercial destinations after retirement of the International Space Station in 2030.”</p><p><span id="docs-internal-guid-ddb56a6d-7fff-9f23-f423-5f64adf3a599"></span></p><p dir="ltr">In the International Space Station Transition Report produced by NASA, the organisation said the plan was for the ISS to fall to Earth and land in an area called the South Pacific Ocean Uninhabited Area - also known as Point Nemo.</p><p dir="ltr"><img src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/2022/02/space-iss1.jpg" alt="" width="1280" height="720" /></p><p dir="ltr"><em>The International Space Station has been the source of many scientific innovations and firsts, including the first chilli peppers to be grown in space (Pictured). Image: NASA</em></p><p dir="ltr">Named after the submarine operator in Jules Verne’s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Point Nemo is an area in the ocean that is the farthest from land.</p><p dir="ltr">The area is approximately 4800 kilometres from the eastern coast of New Zealand and 3200 kilometres north of Antarctica.</p><p dir="ltr">The ISS won’t be the first to make Point Nemo its final resting place, with estimates that more than 263 pieces of space debris have been sunk there by the US, Russia, Japan, and European countries since 1971.</p><p dir="ltr">According to the report, the ISS is expected to deorbit in January 2031 and perform thrusting manoeuvres to ensure a “safe atmospheric entry”.</p><p dir="ltr">Though an end date has been set, work will continue on the ISS until the very end, with NASA saying goals for the space lab include using it as an “analog for a Mars transit mission”.</p><p dir="ltr">“The International Space Station is entering its third and most productive decade as a groundbreaking scientific platform in microgravity,” Robyn Gatens, the director of the ISS at NASA Headquarters, said in a statement.</p><p dir="ltr">“This third decade is one of results, building on our successful global partnership to verify exploration and human research technologies to support deep space exploration, continue to return medical and environmental benefits to humanity, and lay the groundwork for a commercial future in low-Earth orbit.</p><p dir="ltr">“We look forward to maximising these returns from the space station through 2030 while planning for transition to commercial space destinations that will follow.”</p><p dir="ltr">During its time in orbit, the ISS has been home to many scientific firsts in space, including the first items to be 3D-printed, the first sequencing of DNA, and growing of lettuces, radishes and chillies.</p><p dir="ltr"><span id="docs-internal-guid-1cd41515-7fff-ce61-9732-a28d780a7c98"></span></p><p dir="ltr"><em>Image: NASA</em></p>

Woman’s X-ray from car crash reveals dangers of common habit

5 car problems you’ll regret ignoring

<p>No one wants to admit that their car needs a service because no one wants to deal with a potentially hefty bill. But ignoring your car problems is a decision you’ll soon regret. Those leaks, screeches, and dashboard notification lights each indicate an issue that can be serious, dangerous, and costly if you pretend it’s just not there. By dealing with these problems when they first rear their ugly heads, you can avoid an expensive repair necessary to keep your car running.</p> <p><strong>1. “Check engine” light</strong></p> <p>We’ve all been there: The dreaded “check engine” light just flicked on and you fear a massive bill from your mechanic is in your immediate future. We’re sorry to break the news to you, but fear isn’t a good reason to put off a trip to your mechanic. “If your ‘check engine’ light turns on, you should have your car tested as soon as possible because it’s a signal that something is wrong,” explains Tony Arevalo from carsurance.net.</p> <p>He knows this is a bitter pill to swallow and that “people often postpone going to the mechanic precisely because the car is still running,” but doing so may cause major damage to your vehicle. Depending on what type of car you have, you might actually be in luck.</p> <p><strong>2. Low fuel warning light</strong></p> <p>You might think you know your car and just how long it will run on just how little fuel, but you shouldn’t test this theory—and not just because you might get stuck. Auto professionals and mechanics alike agree that you should not be driving on less than a quarter tank of fuel.</p> <p>Laura Gonzalez, Marketing Manager for Volkswagen, says that this is because “the fuel pump uses petrol as not only a lubricant but also as a method to keep it cool. If you run your car to the point that it’s almost completely out of fuel, you can damage the fuel pump if it sucks in air, causing it to heat up and burn out.” That’s a repair you desperately want to avoid since it’s labour intensive and costly.</p> <p><strong>3. Alignment problems</strong></p> <p>You may think that you can course-correct your car when your tyres are pulling you to the left or right as you drive, but this is a risky prospect. First, it makes it harder for you to stay safe on the road. Second, says Cindy Price, Import Service Manager at Ricart Automotive, your tyres will suffer.</p> <p>The crazy thing is, you may not even realise you have an alignment problem right away since the first sign of a problem isn’t actually your car pulling one way or the other. “What typically happens first is uneven tyre wear, and by then it is too late—you need new tyres,” Price explains. “Not checking your alignment on a regular basis can end up being very costly in the long run and result in needing new tires more frequently than normal.”</p> <p><strong>4. Chipped windscreen glass</strong></p> <p>It’s not just an aesthetic issue. “Your windscreen provides up to 30 per cent of your vehicle’s structural strength, meaning any chips or cracks can weaken your windscreen, compromising your safety in a crash or rollover situation,” says Ed Sprigler, VP of Strategic Initiatives at Safelite AutoGlass. Another reason you shouldn’t ignore chipped windscreen glass? “Windscreens host an important yet delicate camera called ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) that control some of our favourite safety features, such as blind-spot monitoring, lane assist, and auto-braking,” Sprigler explains.</p> <p><strong>5. Slow start</strong></p> <p>“When it comes to auto repair, many people believe that if you ignore a car problem, it will go away, including a slow start,” says Matt Allen, the host of Arizona’s Bumper to Bumper Radio and owner of Virginia Auto Service and Import Car Specialists in Phoenix. This is not the case… at all. Why you turn down the radio when you're trying to park your car

<p>You’re driving down an unfamiliar street on a clear spring evening. You’ve been invited to a friend of a friend’s party, at a house you’ve never been to before.</p> <p>Tracking the street numbers, you see you’re getting close, so you (almost automatically) turn the radio down. Finally, with all that music out of the way, you might actually be able to <em>see</em> the house.</p> <p>Why is it that Cardi B must be silenced so you can better see the address of your party? For that matter, why do we have a convention to read silently when in a library?</p> <p>One response might be: “When we need to concentrate a little more, like when we’re looking for a house in the dark, we often try to get rid of distractions so we can focus.”</p> <p>This answer is intuitively appealing. It’s also exactly the kind of answer cognitive psychologists try to avoid.</p> <p>The words <em>concentrate</em>, <em>distractions</em>, and <em>focus</em> all point towards something (attention) that is left undefined. Rather than detailing its properties and how it works, we just assume people intuitively know what it means.</p> <p>This is a little circular, like a dictionary using a word in its own definition.</p> <p><strong>Hashtag nofilter</strong></p> <p>When you have a problem that seems inseparable from intuition, one way to get a handle on it is to a use a metaphor.</p> <p>One of the most important metaphors for attention was provided by psychologist Donald Broadbent in 1958: <a href="http://www.communicationcache.com/uploads/1/0/8/8/10887248/d_e._broadbent_-_perception_and_communication_1958.pdf">attention acts like a filter</a>. In his metaphor, all sensory information – everything we see, hear, feel on our skin, and so on – is retained in the mind for a very short period simply as physical sensation (a colour in a location, a tone in the left ear).</p> <p>But when it comes to bringing meaning to that sensory information, Broadbent argued, we have limited capacity. So attention is the filter that determines which parts of the torrent of incoming sensation are processed.</p> <p>It might seem like this broad description of a filter doesn’t buy us much in terms of explanation. Yet, sadly for Broadbent, he gave just enough detail to be proven incorrect.</p> <p>A year after the publication of Broadbent’s book, the psychologist <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1080/17470215908416289">Neville Moray found</a> that when people are listening to two simultaneous streams of speech and asked to concentrate on just one of them, many can still detect their own name if it pops up in the other stream.</p> <p>This suggests that even when you’re not paying attention, some sensory information is still processed and given meaning (that a mass of sounds is our name). What does that tell us about how this central bottleneck of attention might act?</p> <p><strong>Radar love</strong></p> <p>One answer comes from <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/225765926_Divided_attention_between_simultaneous_auditory_and_visual_signals">a remarkable 1998 study</a> by Anne-Marie Bonnel and Ervin Hafter. It builds upon one of the most successful theories in all psychology, <a href="https://www.encyclopedia.com/medicine/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/signal-detection-theory">signal detection theory</a>, which describes how people make decisions based on ambiguous sensory information, rather like how a radar might detect a plane.</p> <p>One of the basic problems of radar detection is to work out whether it is more likely that what is being detected is a signal (an enemy plane) or just random noise. This problem is the same for human perception.</p> <p>Although apparently a metaphor like Broadbent’s filter, signal detection theory can be evaluated mathematically. The mathematics of human identification, it turns out, largely match those of radar operation.</p> <p><strong>A perfect circle</strong></p> <p>Bonnel and Hafter recognised that if people have a finite amount of attention to divide between vision and hearing, you could expect to see a particular pattern in certain experiments.</p> <p>Imagine attention as an arrow of a fixed length that can swing back and forth between sight and hearing. When it’s pointing entirely towards sight, there’s no room for any focus on hearing (and vice versa). But if a little attention is taken up by hearing, that means there is less directed towards sight. If you graph this relationship, the tip of the arrow will draw a neat circle as it swings from one to the other.</p> <p>Sure enough, the data from their experiments did indeed form a circle, but only in a certain case. When people were asked simply to <em>detect</em> whether a stimulus was present, there was no trade-off (paying more attention to vision did not change hearing performance and vice versa). It was only when people were asked to <em>identify</em> the specific stimulus that this circle appeared.</p> <p>This suggests that while do we indeed have a limited capacity to process information, this is only the case when we’re processing the information for meaning, rather than being aware of its presence.</p> <p>Our <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25222469">own research</a> suggests this pattern indicates some deeper constraint at the heart of the way we perceive the world.</p> <p>The circle represents a fundamental limit on processing. How airplane crash investigations work

<p>The <a href="https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/ethiopian-airlines-plane-crash/index.html">fatal crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302</a> has resulted in the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/canada-grounds-boeing-737-max-8-leaving-us-as-last-major-user-of-plane/2019/03/13/25ac2414-459d-11e9-90f0-0ccfeec87a61_story.html">worldwide grounding of Boeing 737 Max aircraft</a>. Investigators are probing the crash and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/report-on-airline-crash-that-killed-189-people-draws-few-conclusions/2018/11/27/a07b833c-f274-11e8-80d0-f7e1948d55f4_story.html">another like it that occurred less than five months earlier</a> in Indonesia.</p> <p>As an experienced airline pilot, aircraft accident investigator and <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=I0IMxAkAAAAJ&amp;hl=en">professor of aviation</a>, I know that such major crash investigations are an enormous effort often involving many countries’ governments and input from dozens of industry partners. The inquiries can take months of painstaking work. They often yield important insights that improve flight safety for everyone long into the future. Here’s how an investigation generally goes.</p> <p><strong>A massive collaboration</strong></p> <p>The accident investigation process is laid out by the standards and recommended practices in an international agreement called <a href="https://store.icao.int/index.php/annexes/13-aircraft-accident-and-incident-investigation.html">Annex 13</a> of the <a href="https://www.icao.int/publications/pages/doc7300.aspx">Convention on International Civil Aviation</a>. That document outlines the <a href="https://www.icao.int/safety/airnavigation/aig/pages/documents.aspx">process of gathering and analyzing information</a> and drawing conclusions – including determining the causes of a crash and making safety recommendations.</p> <p>The government of the country where the crash occurred takes the lead in the investigation. Also involved are investigators from the countries where the aircraft is registered, where the airline’s headquarters is, where the aircraft designer is based and where the aircraft was assembled. Countries where the engines or other major aircraft components were designed and assembled and those with citizens killed or seriously injured in the crash may also take part in the investigations.</p> <p>The Ethiopian Airlines crash is under investigation by Ethiopian authorities, with the assistance of members of the U.S. <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/03/10/ethiopian-airlines-flight-302-no-survivors-in-crash-of-boeing-737.html">National Transportation Safety Board</a>. Other countries – including Kenya, France, Canada, China, Italy and the U.K., which all <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/10/world/africa/ethiopian-airlines-plane-crash-victims.html">lost several citizens in the crash</a> – may ask to be part of the process.</p> <p>Ethiopian investigators can seek technical advice not only from participating countries’ representatives, such as the NTSB, but also from the companies that made the plane and its engines – in this case, Boeing and CFM international, respectively.</p> <p><strong>From emergency to inquiry</strong></p> <p>At the beginning of the inquiry, the investigator-in-charge, usually an investigator from the lead country’s aviation safety board, coordinates with local first responders to determine what hazards may be present at the crash site, and ensures safe access for investigators to visit the wreckage. Dangerous debris could include hazardous cargo, flammable or toxic materials and gases, sharp or heavy objects and pressurized equipment. Human remains or blood from injured victims may also pose dangers of disease, meaning investigators must protect themselves against viruses, bacteria or parasites.</p> <p>The <a href="https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/process/pages/default.aspx">investigators on the scene</a> take photos and videos of the wreckage and collect as much physical evidence as they can. They also conduct interviews with eyewitnesses and draw charts showing the debris field and any indications of how the aircraft hit the ground, such as the angle of impact, the distribution of debris and other details.</p> <p>If parts of aircraft can be salvaged, they can be moved to a secure facility such as a hangar for wreckage reassembling. This can assist in determining missing or damaged components, and gaining a fuller idea of what happened.</p> <p>Investigators also collect all the documents related the plane, its crew and its recent flights for forensic analysis.</p> <p>An early priority is locating the crucial evidence in what are often called the plane’s “black boxes.” There are two kinds. The flight data recorders keep track of flight parameters such altitude, heading, instrument readings, power settings and flight control inputs. The cockpit voice recorders store all communications with the aircraft, including from air traffic controllers, and record any conversations among cockpit occupants and other audible cockpit sounds for the two hours leading up to the crash. All that information lets analysts reconstruct, and even create video simulations of, the last moments of the plane’s flight.</p> <p>If either of those devices is damaged, authorities may ask the aircraft’s manufacturer to verify the salvaged data. Ethiopian investigators have asked for foreign help to analyze the black-box data. They originally asked Germany’s Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, but that agency said it <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ethiopia-airplane-germany/germany-says-will-not-analyse-ethiopian-airlines-black-box-idUSKCN1QU2HG">didn’t have the technical know-how</a> either. France’s Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety, one of the <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ethiopia-airplane/ethiopian-crash-black-boxes-arrive-in-paris-for-analysis-idUSKCN1QV0UF">most experienced crash investigation agencies</a> in the world, is handling them instead.</p> <p>In the early stages of an investigation, there are a lot of people working on different aspects of the inquiry all at once. As the preliminary lead accident investigator for the <a href="https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/Helicopter-Crash-at-Adukrom-117151">Ghanaian MI-17 helicopter crash</a> in Adukrom, Ghana, in January 2007, I had to coordinate the securing of the crash site and do field interviews of witnesses while charting the debris and recovering the “black box” for further analysis.</p> <p><strong>Technical groups assemble</strong></p> <p>Other teams look at technical aspects that might have contributed in any way to the crash. They look at air traffic control activity and instructions, weather, human performance issues like crew experience and training, maintenance records, emergency response, safety equipment, aircraft performance and subsystems.</p> <p>They may disassemble the crashed plane’s engines or other components and use flight simulators to attempt to experience what the pilots were dealing with. Analysts even study the metals used to make components to see how they should perform – to later compare that information with what actually happened during the crash.</p> <p>A team also interviews any survivors, rescue personnel and subject-matter experts. Forensic teams and medical examiners will analyze victims’ remains to identify them for family members and to examine the injuries they suffered, and test for any drugs, alcohol or even carbon monoxide in their bodies that might have impaired their judgment or performance.</p> <p>In some cases, especially high-profile crashes, investigators will hold public hearings, at which they gather more evidence and make public some of what they have found. This helps assure the public that the process is open and transparent, and is not covering up the responsibility of any guilty party.</p> <p><strong>Findings and conclusions</strong></p> <p>After they rigorously analyze all the data, devise, test and evaluate different hypotheses for what could have happened, the investigative team must determine causes and contributing factors. The goal is to identify anything – acts someone did (or didn’t) do, properties of a materials, gusts of wind, and so on – that had any role in the crash.</p> <p>The report should include both immediate causes – such as active failures of pilots or maintenance crew – and underlying reasons, like insufficient training or pressure to rush through a task.</p> <p>Within 30 days after the crash, the investigation team must release a preliminary report to the <a href="https://www.icao.int/">International Civil Aviation Organization</a>, the U.N.-related global agency overseeing commercial air travel. A final report is normally expected to follow before a year has passed. In cases where a <a href="http://www.mh370.gov.my/en/">final report can’t be issued</a> on that timeline, the team should release an <a href="http://www.mh370.gov.my/en/442-4th-interim-statement-mh370-safety-investigation-8-march-2018">interim report on each anniversary</a> of the event, detailing the progress so far.</p> <p><strong>Improving safety</strong></p> <p>At any point during the investigation, investigators can recommend any preventative action that it has identified as necessary to improve flight safety. In the wake of the Lion Air crash, Boeing was reportedly working on <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/boeing-to-make-key-change-in-max-cockpit-software-11552413489">a fix to a software system</a>, but it didn’t get released before the Ethiopian Airlines crash.</p> <p>The final report, including all the safety recommendations, is released by the country that conducted the investigation to the public and is aimed at improving aviation safety and not to apportion blame.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. “Very poor taste”: Airline slammed after morbid Twitter gaffe

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">An airline has had to apologise to the public after tweeting a grim statistic as a part of a “Tuesday Trivia” promotion.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The airline tweeted statistics about the likelihood of a passenger dying during a crash based on their seating assignment.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“According to data studies by Time, the fatality rate for the seats in the middle of the plane is the highest.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“However, the fatality rate for the seats in the front is marginally lesser and is least for seats at the rear third of a plane,” the tweet said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There was an image of an aircraft seat accompanying the tweet as well as the message:  “Seats at the back of a plane are the safest!”.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many twitter users responded in droves, saying that the tweet was inappropriate.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">KLM India removed the tweet and replaced it with an apology.</span></p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"> <p dir="ltr">We would like to sincerely apologise for a recent update. The GPS scam</strong></p> <p>Let’s be honest, in this day and age with a smartphone at everyone’s fingertips, there is no need to pay extra for a GPS. While it’s an easy upsell, you don’t have to be out of pocket for a feature that’s available on your mobile phone. And if you’re worried about running out of data, you can pre-map routes before heading off on your trip.</p> <p><strong>And don’t forget…</strong></p> <p>It seems like a no-brainer to go for the cheapest car rental company you can find, but just remember, that isn’t always a good thing. Many times, you can be sucked into paying hidden fees which result in a huge price bump. Also, don’t forget to keep petrol receipts and photograph any damage to the car before leaving the rental lot.</p>
